The branches of International Law
The standard definition provide that the branches of International Law are:
- International Human rights Law: this is the branch of international law that deals with international laws governing international human rights.
- International Humanitarian Law. This is commonly referred to as the law of war. This is the branch of international law that governs the conduct of armed conflict.
- International Criminal Law. This is the branch of international law that addresses international crime.
- International Refugee Law. This is the branch that deals with addressing the rights and obligations of refugees.
- Private International Law or the body of law surrounding which law govern the conflicts between citizens of different countries. In common law jurisdictions, it is sometimes known as "conflict of laws
- International Law of the sea. This is the branch of International Law that lays down the rules governing the demarcations of the sea and other maritime issues
- International law of treaties or Public International Law. This is the branch that deals with the rules governing treaty making and agreements between states.
The International Law of the sea and the Public International Law open the doors to the domain of International Arbitration.
The former is the private consent to resolve commercial disputes in conjunction with the ancient 'lex mercatoria' structures.
